In dozens of ski films dating back to 1950, Warren Miller depicted the spirit of skiing with entrancing beauty, inspirational soundtracks and corny humor that made attending his films an annual rite for skiers and snowboarders across America.
On Saturday, many will gather to celebrate his life by remembering him on the slopes of Vail Mountain.
The public is invited to a commemorative ski from the top of Chair 4 to Mid-Vail at 3 p.m., to be followed by a celebration at Sarge’s at Mid Vail with live music, guest speakers and a cash bar. After that, there will be parties into the night at several Vail bars including the Bridge Street Bar, Pepi’s and Vendetta’s in Vail Village, plus Tavern on the Square and the Vail Chophouse at Lionshead.
Miller died on Jan. 24 at the age of 93. His first ski film which he shot on a borrowed 16-millimeter movie camera, “Deep and Light,” came out in 1950. Gov. John Hickenlooper has proclaimed Saturday to be Warren Miller Day in Colorado.
