It’s been months since music festival producer Superfly first announced its intention to throw a music-and-culture festival in Denver’s Overland Park Golf Course.
On Thursday, the producer revealed two key details about the festival at a press conference at the McNichols Building: its name and date.
Denver’s Superfly festival will be called Grandoozy, and it’s coming to the Overland Park Golf Course Sept. 14-16.
“Music festivals today are economic drivers,” Richard Scharf, president and CEO of Visit Denver, said at the event. “We’re going to see great economic impact from this. And they’re helping me sell our brand. Everything they promote is who we are.”
Superfly didn’t provide details about the experiences or bands at Grandoozy’s inaugural festival. It will announce most of its acts — including three headliners — on March 20, saving some names and other details for subsequent announcements leading up to the festival.
“It will be about 75 percent of the lineup,” said Superfly co-founder Jonathan Mayers.

According to a preliminary map of the festival grounds, Grandoozy will have at least three stages spread across Overland Golf Course and five “experiences.” At Superfly’s inaugural Lost Lake festival in Phoenix last year, those ranged from a tequila outpost to an outdoor game center.
Despite Colorado’s reputation as a jam-band mecca, Mayers said the festival won’t be focused on that genre, or any one style of music. “There is a specific lens of how it ties together, but it’s pretty wide-ranging.”
“Grandoozy” may sound like an odd name to call anything, unless you’re a cartoon grandpa describing an upcoming oatmeal festival. But co-founder Rick Farman and Mayers have been through the branding-criticism gauntlet before. Remember, these are the guys that founded Bonnaroo, the Tennessee music festival that’s since become the end-all be-all for these massive multi-day festivals. (It wasn’t total nonsense, either: Bonnaroo means “good stuff” in Creole, according to Mayers.)
“One of the tenets of good branding is to be unique and memorable,” Farman added. “We feel like Grandoozy is something that will come to stand for one thing and only that thing.”
