Beta’s final dance party, the World’s Longest Shot Ski and more things to do in Colorado

Bye bye, Beta

SATURDAY. Let’s dance the last dance. After almost 11 years, Denver’s premiere dance club Beta is closing its doors, and will host one last all-out party. The Finale kicks off Saturday at 8 p.m. inside the club at 1909 Blake St. It’s open to ages 18 and over. In its decade of making Denver dance, Beta raked in the recognitions, being named No. 1 nightclub in North America by DJ Magazine in 2011, the No. 1 Dance Club in America by Rolling Stone in 2013, and landing on Billboard’s list of the 25 Greatest Dance Clubs of All Time in 2015. When the club announced its closure via its website and social media, it did not give a reason. Non-refundable tickets are available online (betanightclub.com) for $40 (as of Wednesday). Those interested in VIP bottle service can call 303-437-3011 or email VIP@betanightclub.com.

Ullr Fest is back

JAN. 9-12. The Viking-hat-wearing, shot-ski-taking, polar-plunging Breckenridge Ullr Fest is back. The mountain town welcomes snow-seekers of all ages to celebrate 56 years of Ullr Fest as its classic events, including the biggest bonfire in town, takes over the streets. Ullr revelers can watch as the record for World’s Longest Shot Ski is broken and the insane parade makes its way down Main Street. Watch the bonfire burn baby, burn, and the ice cold Polar Plunge. But, like, what is a Ullr even? The festival celebrates Ullr, the Lord of Winter. By taking shots and wearing Viking hats, you will indeed encourage Ullr to bless the Breckenridge slopes with snow, snow and more snow, and thank him for all that you’ve already gotten. The entire weekend is jam-packed with events all around town. Find the calendar at gobreck.com.

Stock Show steps off

THURSDAY. Oh, Denver. Once a year, while people line the sidewalks to catch 40 Longhorn cattle strolling through downtown, we remember just how special you are. The spur-wearing, cowboy-hat-tipping National Western Stock Show Parade will march ’til the cows come home, starting at Union Station at high noon, then continue along 17th Street before ending at Tremont. This year’s Grand Marshall is a horse that certainly has no problem entertaining a crowd: Broncos mascot Thunder. The Stock Show will then rope you in Jan. 12-27 with rodeos, cute and cuddly animals and all its classic Western charm. Find a full schedule at ationalwestern.com.

Flying into the new year

THROUGH SUNDAY. It’s never too early to start planning for fly fishing season. (It’s a thing, people say.) The 17th annual Denver Fly Fishing Show will take place at the Denver Mart, 451 E. 58th Ave., Jan. 5-7. Fishing fanatics can check out demonstrations and presentations on casting, fly tying and more inside walls and walls of rods, reels, fly lines, boots, waders, clothing and flies. Adult admission is $15 for one day, $25 for two days and $35 for three days. Children under 5 and Boy and Girl Scouts under 16 in uniform are free. Find a schedule of films, classes, seminars, door prizes and demonstrations at flyfishingshow.com/denver-co.
