Need a little Monday pick-me-up? Let Ultreia, the upcoming tapas restaurant from the Crafted Concepts team behind Rioja, Stoic & Genuine, Euclid Hall and Bistro Vendôme, give you the shot of inspiration you need to make it through the day.
Ultreia means onward, the encouragement to keep going, always reaching beyond. It’s basically the restaurant equivalent of an excessively positive cheerleader, and if Jennifer Jasinski, Ultreia’s James Beard Award-winning chef/owner, is willing to be our personal culinary life coach, we’ll take it.
Besides motivation, Ultreia also dishes out awesome food from the Iberian Peninsula of Spain and Portugal. At a sneak peek, stand-out plates included Costillas de Cerdo (Moorish spice-rubbed pork ribs), Ensalada Brassica (cauliflower that tastes so much better than cauliflower has any right tasting), Trucha Curada (cured trout with potato chips) and Pollo Piri Piri (spicy — and they’re not messing around with the spice — roasted chicken).
And then there’s the ham.
For a slab of ham no bigger than a ukulele, $1,100 might seem like a lot of money. But you haven’t tried this ham. Cinco Jotas Jamon Ibérico de Bellota is considered the best ham in the world, and once you try this buttery, salty, sweet, melt-in-your-mouth membrane of pig, you will agree. (You can get a ½ ounce of the Cinco Jotas ham and a ½ ounce of Fermin Jamon Serrano — no porky slouch itself — for about $17. You know, in case you’re not in the market to spend four figures on ham.)
Cocktails are also derived from the Iberian Peninsula, with sherry-based sips and plays on classic Spanish gin tonics headlining the drink menu.
Ultreia will open in Union Station in late November.
