Itzhak Perlman, Tom Petty and “Harry Potter” set for Colorado Symphony’s 2018-19 season

In only his second season as music director, Brett Mitchell will oversee Colorado Symphony performances that balance contemporary classical icons such as Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman with crowd-pleasing programs that draw from movie, video game and rock-star culture.

Tickets for the 2018-19 season at Boettcher Concert Hall, which officially opens Sept. 14 with Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 and a world premiere of principal timpanist William Hill’s latest work, are on sale to Colorado Symphony subscribers starting March 1.

The first-available tickets will come in pre-set packages based on concert series, as well as Flex Passes that offer six-ticket vouchers redeemable one week before concerts, Colorado Symphony officials said. Single tickets will go on sale Aug. 1, and all will be available by calling 303-623-7876 or visiting coloradosymphony.org/tickets.

“We’re thrilled to welcome such special guests as Itzhak Perlman and Leslie Odom Jr., but I’m every bit as excited to showcase my incredible colleagues that make up the Colorado Symphony as we share the stage together all season long,” Mitchell said in a press statement.

Odom, who originated the role of Aaron Burr in Broadway’s “Hamilton,” is the biggest stage star coming to the Colorado Symphony next season. But the broadly appealing pops programs and screen scores — which have become a staple of most major orchestras in recent years — are returning in a big way.

Seasonal-appropriate shows such as “Disney in Concert: Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas” (Oct. 24-25) and “Time Warp: The Music of the Rocky Horror Show” (Oct. 26-27) will be joined by the “Movie at the Symphony” series featuring “Home Alone” (Nov. 23), “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix” (Jan. 4-6) and the tailor-made “Amadeus” (Jan. 25-26).

Visiting stars include ukulele sensation Jake Shimabukuro (Sept. 7), Broadway’s Odom (Oct. 13), violinists Zukerman (Nov. 9) and Perlman (Jan. 10), Irish vocal ensemble Celtic Woman (Dec. 17) and Grammy-winning vocalist Gregory Porter (Feb. 23).

The Perlman concert is not included in ticket packages and will only be on sale as single tickets, available Aug. 1.

The Symphony dips into rock and pop songbooks with the music of Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra (Sept. 22), Rodgers and Hammerstein (Oct. 6), Tom Petty (Nov. 24), Nat King Cole (Feb. 23), a women-centric soul and rock program (April 4) and the Final Fantasy video game series (May 2-4).

Finally, the bread-and-butter programming of masters and greats (new and old) comes together with Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem (Nov. 2-4), an all-Beethoven program (Nov. 30-Dec. 2), Dvořák’s “New World” Symphony (Jan. 18-20), Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 (March 1-3), Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition (March 29-31), Berlioz’s Symphony fantastique (May 10-12) and Carl Orff’s ubiquitous Carmina Burana (May 24-26).
