Free Japanese Kite Flying Festival in Lowry and more Denver-area deals starting Sept. 14

Look up!

Beauty will fill the skies over Denver’s Lowry neighborhood on Sept. 16 during the Japanese Kite Flying Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. As part of the festivities, Japanese Edo Kite Master Mikio Toki will make kites with children 8 and under. However, all ages are welcome and invited to bring a kite (of any kind) to Lowry Great Lawn Park (101 Yosemite St.) in Denver for a day of high-flying fun. To make the day complete, organizers encourage attendees to bring a picnic. If you don’t, the Yatai food truck is scheduled to make a stop. jascolorado.org

(Un)paint the town

Does it bother you when you see graffiti defacing signs and buildings around town? Be part of the solution by joining the annual Graffiti Brush Off and Litter Cleanup on Sept. 15 from 8 a.m. to noon. Denver Partners Against Graffiti is looking for volunteers of all ages to help paint out graffiti vandalism and pick up litter along stretches of East Colfax Avenue. Denver Public Works will provide all the cleaning supplies. Volunteers just need to bring lots of enthusiasm and elbow grease. Besides civic pride, volunteers get a free lunch and are eligible to win prizes at the end of the event. Register for the clean-up by calling 720-913-1311. denvergov.org/graffiti

Ahoy, mateys!

Sweet seekers should get ready to sail over to Long John Silver’s on Sept. 19 to talk like a pirate and get a free deep-fried Twinkie. For those not well-versed in speaking “pirate,” here are a few suggestions: “Arrgh, I’ve come to plunder me free treat!” or “Ahoy, matey! I’ve come for me sweet treasure.” No need to dress up, just offer up your best pirate impression for the gold. If you do dress up as your favorite buccaneer, you’ll get a complimentary Fish ‘N Fry entrée. ljsilvers.com
