Cat’s meow
The Dumb Friends League has more than 200 cats looking for a loving home. Through Oct. 21, adopt an adult cat (1 year and older) for free. Feline adoption fees typically range from $55 to $75, so it’s a deal worth purring about for families wanting to add a furry friend to the household. Each adoption includes spay/neuter surgery, initial vaccinations, microchip ID implant and a complimentary office visit with a participating veterinarian. All potential pet parents must still go through the standard screening process. The special is good at both the Quebec Street Shelter (2080 S. Quebec St.) in Denver and the Buddy Center (4556 Castleton Ct.) in Castle Rock. Maybe even consider a festive black cat? ddfl.org
Characters welcome
Young ghosts and goblins can enjoy Halloween with the Peanuts gang at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s Great Pumpkin Celebration from Oct. 26 to 31. For parents, the best treat of all is that it’s completely free. Kids (12 and under) receive a photo of themselves hanging with Snoopy and his friends. The first 75 children to have their photo taken each day also get a trick-or-treat bag. Plus, there are plenty of crafts and games to occupy the “little monsters.” For extra fun, stop in on Oct. 27 or 31, when children can trick-or-treat in the store and show off in a costume parade. (Top three costumes will win a prize and the first 100 participants get a bat hat.) Activities and times vary by day, so review the schedule online before making plans. If you want extra pics, a special $5 photo package (regularly $10) memorializes the spooky fun. Bass Pro Shops is located at Northfield at Stapleton in Denver. Cabela’s has two metro locations in Lone Tree and Thornton. basspro.com/halloween; cabelas.com/halloween

Prepare your taste buds for big savings at Smashburger. The burger joint is offering its popular Smash Pass again, but, this time, it’s bigger and better. Through Nov. 4, purchase its Smash Pass for $100, while supplies last. Available online only, the pass holds the key to lots of savings for hungry bargain hunters. From Nov. 5 to Feb. 14, 2019, pass holders receive one coupon each day, good for any a la carte entrée for free. That’s 100 days of totally free food. You must join the chain’s loyalty program Smash Club, in order to activate the pass. Then, each day, a free entrée coupon will be added to your account — valid only for that day. If burgers every day might be too much, Smashburger does dish up lighter fare, including turkey burgers, black bean burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches and salads. It’s the best deal the Denver-based chain has ever offered. smashburger.com/smashpass
Chicken feed
Chick-fil-A fans are in for a real treat. The chicken chain is giving Denver customers something to cluck about through the end of the year…free food. Through Dec. 29, get a free menu item every week, including entrées, sides and desserts. The item varies each week, with some weeks giving you an option to pick between two items. The offer resets every Monday. (Remember, Chick-fil-A is closed on Sundays.) How do you get the freebie? All you have to do is download (or update) the app and join its loyalty program, Chick-fil-A One. (If you already have the app, the offer automatically appears under “Rewards.”) A redemption code is provided through the app and redeemable by either placing a mobile order or presenting the code at the register. You must allow the app to access your location, in order to receive the freebie. cfadenver.com/treat-yourself
