Denver’s official Breakfast Burrito Day returns Saturday. Here’s where to get your free and cheap deals.

Some like ’em spicy. Some like ’em oozing. And some like ’em smothered.

While not everyone can agree how they should be served, everyone can agree that Denver loves its breakfast burritos. Now, the city has its own official day to celebrate the bundles of joy. (The kind that comes wrapped in a tortilla, that is.)

Last year, Mayor Michael Hancock and Santiago’s declared that the second Saturday in October is Breakfast Burrito Day. Did our Breakfast Burrito Bracket have anything to do with the newly smothered holiday? The world may never know.

This Saturday, Oct. 13, the tradition continues with special deals on this handheld breakfast favorite all over the Front Range.

In 2017, the 28 participating Santiago’s locations sold almost 90,000 breakfast burritos, according to this year’s announcement. That breaks down to: 209,616 eggs, 87,340 tortillas, 1,819 pounds of hatch green chiles, 1,365 gallons of green chile and 2,729 pounds of cheese.

OK 2018, challenge accepted. Santiago’s is getting nostalgic by rolling back the price of its breakfast burritos to $1.25, the same price as when the doors opened in 1991. Additionally, Santiago’s will be giving out swag all day and donating 2 percent of all sales to a local charity for its annual campaign.

Breakfast burritos will be available all day until closing, and customers are limited to five breakfast burritos at this throwback price, with no substitutions or add-ons. Burritos will come with or without chile (a recipe by Morales’s mother) and cheese.

Last year, Illegal Pete’s gave out 4,000 free breakfast burritos in honor of the holiday, according to a release.

For the second year in a row, you can stop into any Illegal Pete’s location (with the exception of the Hill, which doesn’t serve breakfast, and Mill, which won’t be open yet) between the hours of 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. for a free breakfast burrito, no purchase necessary.

Top Chef season 5 winner Hosea Rosenberg’s Santo has become a breakfast burrito destination in Boulder, offering treats filled with farm eggs, cheese, chiles, tater tots, beans, meat and “bacon of the day” options Monday through Friday mornings.

In honor of Breakfast Burrito Day, Santo will offer a free seasonal house beverage to guests who mention seeing this story or the breakfast burrito post this week from @santoboulder on social media.

The breakfast burrito available on Saturday between 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. is Santo’s jazzed up brunch version, smothered in red or green chile (or both) and filled with scrambled eggs, organic greens, potatoes, beans, peppers, cheese, pico de gallo and crema, with a choice of meat: pork, chicken adovada, bison lengua, or bacon.
