Snow may be in Denver’s forecast early next week, but Coloradans will have to wait until the end of December to frolic in Dillon’s icy winter playground.
Ice Castles, LLC on Monday announced its return to Colorado for the 2018-2019 winter season. The Dillon Ice Castles drew tens of thousands of visitors in 2017 and brought about $3 million to the local economy, according to the Utah company that runs the attraction.
It’s the second straight season Ice Castles has chosen Dillon as its only Colorado location. The company had a one-year run in Silverthorne in 2013.
Construction of the 40-foot towers, slides, tunnels and igloos will begin in late November. “Professional ice artisans” will harvest thousands of icicles every day to create the winter wonderland about an hour west of Denver. At night, the approximate 25 million pounds of ice sparkle in LED lighting.
Five other Ice Castles sites will open this year in Utah, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Alberta, Canada.
Although the doors to the castles will be closed for the next few months, it’s time to break out the sweaters and jackets. Denver has a chance of snow early next week, according to the Weather Channel.
